By Stephen Koo

The Islamic Calendar was a calendar developed by the Muslims. It is an entirely lunar calendar, with twelve months. A lunar calendar is a calendar based on the phases of the moon. The calendar we use today, the Gregorian calendar, is a lunisolar calendar, which is based on the sun and the moon. The Islamic year is slightly shorter than a regular year, and begins at the date of the Hejira (The journey of Muhammad to Medinah. Day 1 and year 0 of the Islamic calendar is in correlation with July 16, 622 on the Gregorian calendar.
